About Us
THE NAME
The term "Christadelphian" means "Brethren in Christ." The basis for this name is taken from:
Matthew 23:8-10 "But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ."
This name reflects the belief in the equality of members under the headship of Christ and ultimately God. The purpose of the name is to proclaim the communities association with Christ while distancing it from what has become "Christianity." The term was coined in 1864, by John Thomas, in response to the need for a name during the American Civil War.
BELIEF
The Christadelphians believe the Bible, in its entirety, is the inspired word of God (2 Timothy 3:16) and is the only authority in matters of belief. They believe that the God described in the bible is the only true and living God. (1 Thessalonians 1:9) That Jesus Christ was/is God's son but was a man like we are capable of sinning yet lived a sinless life. (Hebrews 4:15) The community seeks to revive the teachings of Christ and his apostles concerning God's word. For a detailed list of those beliefs with supporting scripture see Birmingham Amended Statement of Faith.
STRUCTURE
The structure of a Christadelphian service generally consists of a sunday school session of about an hour, followed by a break, and hour long memorial service.
The sunday school session is treated as a time of Bible study and can take the form of presented lecture, joint discussion of a topic, workshop of some ecclesial effort and other such activities. The sunday school session is opened and closed with both a joint hymn and prayer.
The memorial is opened and closed like the sunday school session with a joint hymn and prayer. There will be readings from scripture followed by a talk called an exhortation. The purpose of the exhortation is to lift the minds of the assembly to a spiritual place and bring them into the proper frame of mind for the sharing of the memorial. A variable number of hymns will be sung together throughout the service but there will always be one connected to the memorial in some way. The memorial consists of the sharing of emblems (bread and wine) that will be passed around after a respective prayer. The memorial is not open, only those who are baptized into the shared beliefs of the Christadelphians are to take of the emblems. After the sharing of the emblems, the service will be concluded by hymn and prayer.
Believing in equality of members but separateness of scripturally mandated roles only brothers will perform platform duties, sisters support the worship by fulfilling other jobs.
Attendance for either the sunday school session or memorial is open to anyone where you should be warmly welcomed.
